It's the last week of 2020 and the internet is all a flutter over the Hilaria Baldwin heritage scandal. It turns out that Alec Baldwin’s wife, may not be telling the truth about her heritage. 2020 is a bad year to do that in Hilaria! Essentially, she suggested she was Spanish when in reality, her name is Hilary Hayward-Thomas and she is born raised in Massachusetts. HUH??
Let's cut to the chase. From a crisis management/PR perspective, here’s what I suggest to anyone caught in such a tall tale:
Get off on social media
She should have stopped communicating and inflaming the situation. Yet, instead of laying low, Hilaria kept ranting and the story gained steam. My first piece of advice here, stay away from social media for a long while!
Take responsibility: APOLOGIZE
Hilaria might want to be a part of a different culture but you don’t just take on a persona. Especially in a sensitive year like 2020, where stories on cultural appropriation resonate and enrage. Hilaria really needs to understand why so many have found her actions offensive and take responsibility. Offer a real, heartfelt apology.
Give back
Like many Hollywood couples, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin support many charities. Hilaria why not show affection to the heritage you love through a nice charitable contribution? Donate and support some causes effecting women and children of Spanish heritage?
To sum it up, lay low for a while, show some understanding, and use this as an opportunity to give back to the people you admire so much you wanted to become one.
